In 2025 a Sydney radiology AI startup took $32 million in public money to keep its operations in Australia. This year it restructured. Every manager became a player-coach, every team member an agent orchestrator — the job is now supervising a fleet of AI agents rather than doing the work. A number of staff chose to opt out rather than adapt, and the commercial focus moved to the United States.
The job ads data says something gentler. Analysis of SEEK's own listings since ChatGPT launched in November 2022 shows early-career ads are up in roles AI augments, and only slightly down where it automates — early-career programmer roles fell just 0.3 percentage points. The economist Rafael Domenech calls it a postponed apocalypse and an AI jobs boom. Pay attention to "postponed".
Where the data is unambiguous is trades. Australia needs 72,000 more electricians and energy trades within four years, to build houses for a growing population and data centres that want at least 13,000 of those workers. Same pool, and data centres can outbid housing. With 162 data centres operating and 130 proposed against a $150 billion investment target, that gap only widens.
Underneath all of it: labour productivity growth has fallen from roughly 1.8% a year to 0.8%, AI is being framed as the fix, and the ACTU calls productivity "a bit of a lazy claim" from employers whose only answer is wages and conditions. If AI does lift productivity, nobody has said where the gains go.
I've spent this year as an agent orchestrator myself, and I became the bottleneck almost immediately. I also know people who've opted out of this shift entirely, and I understand exactly why.
