Three weeks ago one Melbourne council had asked for a pause on data centres. Now eight have, the Environment Protection Authority has lodged its first ever objection, and Hume has gone from "pause" to "reject Campbellfield outright". Meanwhile Geelong's CEO has asked a different question entirely: not whether they get built, but what the community gets paid for hosting them.
The councils: Hume, Melton, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Wyndham and Moorabool. The proposal from Geelong is an annual levy on AI data centres for the life of each facility, ring-fenced for local infrastructure, the same requirement renewables projects already carry.
And in the same week, the national rules that were supposed to settle this got weaker. Or didn't, depending on which state government you ask.
There are three responses playing out here: stop, consult, or get paid. If you've ever run a change program, or been on the receiving end of one, you'll recognise all three, and you'll know which one is a sign the process was run properly.
